Oxytocin is a nine-amino-acid peptide hormone produced naturally in the hypothalamus and released by the pituitary gland. Long known for its roles in childbirth and nursing, it has become one of the most intensively studied molecules in social neuroscience — popularly nicknamed the 'bonding hormone' for its links to trust, attachment and connection.
